Cricket Wireless Is Turning 20. Let the Celebrations Begin.
Cricket will Celebrate the Big 2-0 by Serving the Community and Spreading Smiles
Cricket Wireless Celebrates its 20th Birthday with its first customers at the first Cricket store

ATLANTA, Mar. 11, 2019 – Cricket Wireless will celebrate 20 years in wireless on March 17. This is a milestone achievement, and Cricket plans to celebrate this first in prepaid wireless.

“There’s a popular adage that says, ‘Count your age by friends, not years.’ At Cricket, our friends are our customers and employees,” said John Dwyer, president of the AT&T Prepaid Portfolio, which includes Cricket Wireless. “Celebrating our 20th birthday is our way of saying thank you everyone - from our very first customers and employees, to those who recently joined the Cricket family. We’re grateful and humble that they chose, and continue to choose, us. We work hard every day to show they made the right choice.”

How Far We’ve Come

The cell phone industry was still in its infancy when the first Cricket Wireless store opened on March 17, 1999 in Chattanooga, Tenn.  Back then, the Cricket product portfolio consisted of just one device and one wireless plan. Today, that first Cricket store employs members of its original team and serves some of its original customers.  This kind of loyalty alone is worth celebrating.

In those early years, Cricket worked hard to improve the customer experience achieving several “firsts” among no annual contract carriers, including the first to offer:

  • Unlimited U.S. long distance (2004)

  • Unlimited text and picture messaging (2005)

  • High-end devices such as the smartphone (2010)

  • A better experience with the revolutionary iPhone (2012).

Today, Cricket is part of the AT&T Prepaid Portfolio, the nation’s fastest-growing prepaid provider for the past two years.

There are nearly 5,000 Cricket branded stores in all 50 states and in Washington, D.C., and our unlimited customers can call to, from and within Mexico and Canada with no roaming charges. The Cricket product line-up includes a wide range of affordable plans as well as a variety of quality smartphones from leading brands. And we’re continuing our tradition of offering simple, transparent wireless plans and award-winning customer service to our more than 10 million subscribers—a milestone we achieved earlier this year.

Dwyer added, “The industry has evolved so much over the past 20 years—and we’ve evolved with it. We’re proud of all we’ve accomplished and remain focused on delivering a superior level of service and value to our customers—today and in the future.”

So how will Cricket celebrate 20 years in wireless? Here’s a snapshot:

Birthday Surprises

Last week, we kicked off the first phase of our celebration on social media by teaming with Grammy-winning artist @Lecrae. To demonstrate that Cricket is about giving back to the community and making people’s day better, Lecrae gave out gifts (monetary and in-kind donations) totaling $15k to deserving people in Atlanta, home of our corporate headquarters. From surprising an Uber driver to donating violins to the Atlanta Music Project, we set out to generate as many smiles as we could in one day. Mission accomplished. Check out the video. Phase 2 of the campaign kicks off tomorrow, March 12 . We’ll be giving away an additional $5k to unsuspecting people on Instagram live. Tune in to the @CricketWireless Instagram channel to be a part of it.

Cricket Cares - Week of Service

During our birthday month, Cricket will deliver the gift of time through employee volunteerism to communities across the country.  In Atlanta, Cricket employees will volunteer at the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Project Open Hand.  Throughout the week, employees and authorized retailers will look for ways to give back to the communities that have given Cricket and its employees so many reasons to smile.
